S M Jiffry ABDEEN- Kandy Sports Correspondent

St Anthony's College cricket captain and opener Hiran Wickremasekera became the first schoolboy batsman from the hill capital to score 1,000 runs this season and also created history by becoming the first schoolboy from Kandy to score a thousand runs in a season for three successive years on the opening day of their inter-school cricket match against Lumbini Vidyalaya, Colombo at Katugastota yesterday. The match will be continued today at 9.30 am.
When the Antonians won the toss and batted first, Hiran Wickremasekera had scored 972 runs and needed a further 28 runs to reach the four figure mark. He made 40 and has now scored 1,012 runs. He scored a thousand runs in 2009 and 2010 but rains in the month of January prevented the Antonians in playing their traditional matches against Royal College, Ananda College and Dharmaraja College. He was stuck on 972 when season almost ended with the 'big match'.
Hiran Wickremasekera who has won the Eagle at St Anthony's College has performed the feat of scoring 1,000 runs for three successive seasons achieved only once before in the history of school cricket in Sri Lanka. Thus Hiran Wickremasekera will carve his name into the record books.

If Hiran had entered his name in the record books, off spinner Aravinda Premaratne took 7 for 58 to reach 100 wickets for the season and also first schoolboy bowler from the hill capital to reach this landmark. He has now taken 101 wickets.

There is yet another bowler this time from Lumbini Vidyalaya - off spinner Prabath Jayasuriya who is knocking at the doorstep of records. He took 7 for 53 to bring his haul for the season to 99 wickets and needs one more to reach the three figure mark.

This game turned out to be a match of records and has only academical value.
The Antonians batting first made 154 all out with Prabath Jayasuriya running through the batting.
Lumbini in reply made 173 all out and it was Aravinda Premaratne who did the damage.
The scores:
St Anthony's College 154 all out in 44.4 overs (Hiran Wickremasekera 40, Yohan Woods 17, Aruna Bandara 36, Sachin Bulathsinhala 23, Aravinda Premaratne 24, Prabath Jayasuriya 7 for 53, Maduka Liyanage 2 for 35).
Lumbini Vidyalaya 173 all out in 37.3 overs (Ashan Ravindu 29, Damith Priyadharshana 19, Saman Ousmand 15, Chanaka Dushmantha 23 n.o., Dhammika Dharshana 23, Aravinda Premaratne 7 for 53, Hiran Wickremasekera 2 for 54).
