The 44th Annual Saints’ Quadrangular Final Results and Award winners

 

The 44th Annual Saints’ Quadrangular Cricket and Basketball Tournaments between the Old Boys of St Josephs College, St Benedict’s College, St. Peter’s College and St. Anthony’s College Kandy, was worked off on 20th  and 21st  August, 2011 in Colombo.

Old Josephians won the MAIN 50 over tournament beating archrivals Old Peterites by 63 runs at Maradana, while Old Benedictines won the VETERANS Final ( over 40s) beating Old Josephians by 77 Runs at Kotahena.

Old Josephians also won the Basketball Finals beating defending champions (for the last seven years), Old Benedictines by 65 to 54 points at St. Joseph’s courts Maradana.  For Old Josephians Dilanka Bois netted 19 points and was well supported by Mafaz Mohideen who scored 16 points and Rimaz Hassan who shot 10 points. Roshan Randima scored 22 points for Old Bens

Best Batsman - Roshane Silva , Old Josephians for his knock of 85 not out.

A special award was presented to old Antonian Mr. Ranjith Samarasekara fo his excellent
commitment and service rendered to the Quadrangular as a founder member.
The tournament was hosted this year by St. Joseph’s College

Cricket Main 50 Overs Quadrangular cricket match

In the main 50 overs a side Cricket Quadrangular tournament semifinals, St.Joseph’s College took on St. Anthony’s College at Darley Road on Saturday 20th while St.Benedict’s College met St.Peter’s College at Kotahena on the same day.

St.Anthony's vs St.Joseph's - lost by 9 wickets

Old Antonians 157 all out in 33.3 overs ( Mahesh Palihakkara 52 (3 fours,  4 sixes), Mahimadasa Patrick 28 no ( 3 fours and 2 sixes)
Tissara Perera 4 for 26, Sanjeeva Rasih 2 for 44, Rajiv Weerasinghe 2 for 18.

Old Josephians 158 for no loss in 11.4 overs
Charinda Fernando 80 no, 12 fours, 4 sixes in 40 balls) , Tissara Perera 67no ( 8 fours 5 sises in 30 balls)

 

Over 40 Veterans 25 Overs Cricket match

In the Veterans over 40 tournament semifinals, St. Joseph’s College confronted St. Peter’s College and St. Benedict’s College played against St. Anthony’s College on Saturday 20th at Bambalapitiya. The match between St.Anthony’s and St.Joseph’s was reduced to 20 overs due to delayed start instead of 25 overs.

Old Josephians 123 for 7 in 20 overs ( Rukshan Soza 12, Shehan Fernando 16, Dushan Soza 33 no ( 2 sixes, 5 fours ), Lalith Perera ( 2 fours ), Hiran Cooray 11, Harin De S. Wijeratne 9 no. Priyanka Nanayakkara 4 for 13, Asela Herath 2 for 25, Priyantha Gulandapitiya 1 for 25 ).

Old Antonians 114 all out in 17.1 overs ( Kinsley Perera 14, Asela Herath 23 ( 2 sixes 2 fours ) Priyantha Ulandapitiya 12 ( 1 six, 1 four), Mohamed Azary 33 ( 4 fours, 1 six ), Rukshan Soza 3 fro 17, Kumudu Fonseka 2 for 26, Krishan Thilakaratne 1 fro 23, Hiran Cooray 2 for 20, Harin De S. Wijeratne 2 for 11.

 

Basketball

In the basketball tournament semifinals, St. Benedict’s College played with St. Anthony’s College and St. Joseph’s College confronted St. Peter’s College on Sunday 21st.at Darley Road where matches were played in Round Robin format.

Round Robin Match 1: St.Anthony's vs St.Joseph's - lost by 7 pionts
Round Robin Match 4: St.Anthony's vs St.Peter's - won 61-60 (by one point)

Round Robin Match 6: SEMI FINALS
Old Bens beat Old Antonians 78 - 75 points (scorers for Old Bens) Roshan Randima 20 points, Nushan Eranda 19. (scorers for Old Antonians - Lakshitha Abeyratne 26 points, Yases Samarajeewa 21 points, Maduranga Munasingha 16 points).

All Basketball matches were played at St.Joseph's court

This Saints Quadrangular tournament has produced some exciting matches in the past and in the series tally, Old Joes now have 12 victories, Old Bens and Old Peterites are level with eleven victories to their credit while Old Antonians have clinched the title on nine occasions.

This event was inaugurated in 1963 by Old Bens Sports Club to coincide with the 50th year celebration of  St.Benedict’s College, and since then it has been conducted annually except only on four occasions during the years. Old Antonians won the inaugural title under the captaincy of the late Harry Jayasundera.

The Veterans over 40 tournament was inaugurated in 2002 with the Old Peterites captained by Roy Dias emerging victorious. But since then Old Bens have dominated the veterans tournament and they are currently ahead in the series with a total of Four victories. The Old Antonians have just a solitary victory to their credit.

The Basketball tournament was inaugurated in 2004. The Old Benedictines have clinched seven victories in a row since inauguration and Old Josephians snatched it this year for the first occasion beating Old Benedictines in the final.

This year the tournament was hosted by the Old Josephians Sports Club. The tournament also featured the traditional social get-together of the old boys which was held at St.Joseph’s, College, Bonjean Hall organized by the Old Josephians Sports Club on Saturday 20th August. The members of the participating teams and many Old boys from the four schools attended. Old Antonian Ranjith Samarasekera a founder member of the Saints Quadrangular in 1963 and Akantha Pandithasekera, the President of  St.Anthony’s College, Old Boys Association, Colombo branch, were among the many other Antonians who attended the dinner
