The 44th Annual Saints’ Quadrangular cricket and Basketball Championships for old boys of four leading catholic schools, St Josephs College, St Benedict’s College, St. Peter’s College and St. Anthony’s College - Kandy will be hosted this year by St. Joseph’s College on August 20 and 21 in Colombo. This was revealed during a press briefing held at the Old Joe’s Sports Club recently.

The tournament was inaugurated in 1963 as St. Benedict’s College sent an open invitation to schools to participate in an old boys cricket tournament which received response from only these three other schools. The first tournament worked off at the St. Benedict’s grounds as a two day fixture where the St. Anthony’s team became the winners.

A founder member of the tournament old Antonian Ranjith Samarasekara said that the sole aim of the tournament was to cultivate friendship and brotherhood among the old boys of these schools.

He went down memory lane and thanked all those who served to make this tournament a success for so long. Ranjith claims that this quadrangular is the oldest old boys sports festival in the country and this tournament was represented by many national cricketers in various stages who have been the products of these schools and played for the country. The Quadrangular has only been stranded for four times in its history for various reasons.

Apart from the main 50 over tournament a 25-over tournament for over 40 years has been introduced in 2002 while the Basketball tournament was inaugurated in 2004. Old Antonians and Old Peterites shared the last year’s main event’s joint championship and Antonians became the champions in over 40 years tournament. Old Joes are the reigning Basketball champions.

This year’s 50 over semi finals will work off on August 20. Old Josephians will meet Old Antonians at their home grounds in the first semi final while the Old Peterites will face Old Benedictines at their grounds in the other semi final.

The final of the main event will be held on August 21 at the St. Joseph’s grounds. Over 40 years tournament both semi finals will be played at St. Benedict’s grounds on August 20 where the firs match will see Old Josephians battle with Old Antonians while the second will play between Old Peterites and Old Benedictines. The final will be held on the following day at the St. Peter’s grounds.

The basketball matches will dribble off on the final day at the St. Joseph’s courts and the final will be played in the evening 3.30 p.m. The winners will walk away with the Very Rev. Fr. Joe E. Wickramasinghe Trophy.
